Poetry Reading at the Kurant Cafe
On Monday, June 11th, we will spend the afternoon sipping refreshments and reading poetry at the “Kurant Café”. In addition to reading the poetry you created this year, you may bring in a poem by one of your favorite poets. Please follow the directions below in order to be ready for our poetry reading.
Choose one of the poems you wrote this year to share with the class at our poetry reading. Make sure that you practice reading it many times before next Monday. Here are some tips for reading your poem to the class:
§ speak clearly
§ speak at an appropriate volume
§ speak with feeling (poetry expresses emotions)
OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES
You may do none, one, two or all
1. You can memorize the poem and recite it to the class instead of reading the words from your book.
2. Choose a poem by another author to read to the class at our poetry reading. Make certain you also practice reading this poem. Be ready to tell us the name of the poem and the author. Describe the structure of the poem. For example, is it free verse, haiku, or a cinquain? Does the poet use quatrains? How many stanzas does the poem have? Does the poem rhyme? Can you identify the rhyming pattern? If you have trouble identifying the structure of the poem, bring the poem in before this Friday and I will help you out.
3. Find out some information about the poet. You do not need to do a full-blown biography. Try to include the following information:
§ where the poet is/was from
§ when he/she lives or lived
§ share any interesting facts you can find out about the poet
You may write these facts on an index card or piece of paper. You may also bring in a photograph or picture of the poet or draw a portrait of the poet.
I’m looking forward to our celebration of poetry!
